Why Noah’s Arc Gets a Movie Every 5 Years (But Girlfriends Still Can’t Get One)

Why Noah’s Arc Gets a Movie Every 5 Years (But Girlfriends Still Can’t Get One)

It’s giving drama. It’s giving overdue. It’s giving—where is the Girlfriends movie?!

Let’s talk about it.

Back in 2005, Noah’s Arc was that show. The groundbreaking series aired on Logo and followed a tight-knit group of gay Black men navigating love, friendship, career goals, and messy situations in Los Angeles. Created by the brilliant Patrik-Ian Polk, Noah’s Arc wasn’t just entertainment—it was a cultural moment. Fast-forward to 2025, and Noah's Arc is back (again) with another movie. Yes, baby, the girls are assembling—again!

Now, let’s get one thing straight: I’m here for it. The last movie (Noah's Arc: Jumping the Broom) dropped way back in 2008—so yeah, it’s been a minute. But when that cast reunites, it always feels like a family reunion… with cocktails and unresolved drama. So this 20th-anniversary movie? Oh, you know it’s about to be everything.

BUT HERE’S MY PROBLEM…

Why do I have to jump through hoops like I’m auditioning for American Ninja Warrior just to watch this movie?

They said it’ll be available on Showtime, but then they mentioned Paramount+. But wait—not regular Paramount+—you need the Showtime add-on. So let me get this straight: I already pay for streaming, but now I need to pay extra to watch Noah's Arc? Where’s my Black Gay Discount?

And while we’re here—how is it that Noah’s Arc manages to pull a movie out of the hat every 5 to 6 years, but Girlfriends, one of the most iconic Black shows ever, can’t get a single film? Oh right, the creator said she needs $50 million. Ma’am… is Tracee Ellis Ross getting a flying unicorn entrance? Is Joan buying a planet?

Look—I love both shows. But the way Noah’s Arc fans get fed every few years, while Girlfriends fans are out here eating reruns and nostalgia crumbs, feels personal.

THE SHADE, THE TEA, THE TRUTH:

Noah’s Arc proves that smaller budgets don’t mean smaller impact.

Patrik-Ian Polk stays booked, busy, and blessing us with quality LGBTQ+ storytelling.

Meanwhile, Hollywood keeps ghosting the Girlfriends movie like it’s a bad Tinder date.

And let’s be real—Noah’s Arc ain’t just about the drama or the romance. It’s about legacy, representation, and letting Black queer characters be messy, complicated, and human.

So yes—I’ll figure out how to get this damn Showtime subscription (pray for my debit card). Because when Noah’s Arc drops, it’s not just a movie—it’s an event.

But while we’re watching, can somebody please call Mara Brock Akil and say:

"Sis, we still waiting on Joan and Toni’s reunion. Don’t play with us."
